AKRON, Ohio — Paul Boulier has spent a lot of time thinking about plastics. He’s working in the polymer industry and has recently started his own company, Seauciel, which aims to increase the amount of plastic that gets recycled.

“Becuase we have a dilemma: it's hard for people to figure out, ‘What do the numbers mean?’ They all get thrown into the same containers,” Boulier said, referencing the small numbers put on recyclable plastic items.

But there's a real difference between launching a traditional business and building a technology startup. A traditional entrepreneur usually steps into a market that already exists, improves on a proven model, and focuses on execution. A deep-tech entrepreneur faces something much harder. They have to prove an entirely new technology actually works, convince others to believe in it, and build a whole ecosystem of support long before any revenue shows up.
